Introduction

Services: Design for Manufacture, Metalwork, Welding, Production, Finishing and Assembly Location: Harrods, Knightsbridge, London ON Running commissioned Studio Sowow to design and fabricate a bespoke display and stock storage system for their pop-up within Harrods. The brief required a unit that could serve two purposes at once: a product display that presented footwear in a way that matched Harrods’ premium environment, and an integrated secure storage solution that made efficient use of a tight retail footprint. It had to look like it belonged in one of the most demanding retail environments in the world, and it had to function as a practical piece of operational kit at the same time.

Background

ON Running’s pop-up within Harrods needed to hold its own in one of the most scrutinised retail environments in the world. Harrods sets a very specific standard for anything that appears on its floor. Materials, finish quality, construction method and visual presentation are all evaluated against the store’s own aesthetic. For ON, a Swiss performance brand known for precision engineering and clean design, the brief was to produce a display system that reflected both the brand’s values and the store’s expectations without compromise. Off-the-shelf solutions were not an option.

Solution / Conclusion

We designed and fabricated a modular steel and aluminium shelf unit that functioned as both a product display and a secure stock storage system within the same footprint. The project started with design for manufacture, producing precise engineering drawings before any material was cut. Every component was fabricated in-house: metalwork cut and formed to specification, premium hardware sourced and integrated, and the full assembly welded and finished to the required standard. The modular structure allowed sections to serve different functions within the unit, with display surfaces facing the customer and storage integrated behind. Heavy-duty commercial movement hardware was specified throughout, allowing the system to be repositioned and adapted within the space without compromising the quality of the display face. Build quality was treated as the primary brief. Nothing about the unit could read as temporary or lightweight, and every surface that a Harrods customer would see was finished to match the level of craft the environment demands.
